Female Care

At present the average life expectancy of European women is close to 80 years, and in Spain the figure reaches 83 years. Since the onset of menopause is at age 47 on average, this means that women live approximately one third of their lives without the benefits of ovarian function.
Menopause is characterized by a series of physical changes including accelerated calcium loss from bone (osteoporosis), vulvar and vaginal epithelial atrophy, increases in cholesterol and therefore of cardiovascular problems, and psychological changes (depressive tendencies, reduced sexual desire, etc.) that are directly dependent upon the lack of ovarian hormones in the bloodstream.
Nowadays it is possible to diagnose most of these problems in advance, even when the symptoms are so slight as to go unnoticed by the patient – such as osteoporosis. Bone densitometry allows us to calculate the risk of bone fractures associated with minimum trauma, and facilitates evaluation of the need for treatment (hormone or otherwise) to prevent osteoporosis. The test is quickly performed and causes no patient discomfort of any kind.
Since most menopausal problems are dependent upon the lack of ovarian hormones, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be provided, involving the administration of a minimum dose of natural hormones to avoid the aforementioned complications. The IMER is equipped with the means required for affording full care of menopausal women who may be interested in this type of preventive medicine.
