The psychological counseling team is led by Mª José Milán and Cristina Molina – clinical psychologists and therapists with great experience in the field of infertility.
Infertility sometimes has a great emotional impact on couples that suffer the problem. The diagnosis of infertility often leads to intense feelings of anxiety, depression, guilt, loneliness and a sense of lack of control.
In addition, the different assisted reproduction treatment modalities can exert a negative influence upon the couple, affecting their communication and sexual relations – without neglecting to mention the economical difficulties, occupational problems, social shame and, in some cases, the lack of family support experienced by some of these couples. IMER is particularly sensitive to this issue, and has created an extensive and specialized psychological counseling service composed of:
The fundamental objective of this program is to provide couples with effective coping strategies through the learning of relaxation techniques, emotional self-control, and communication skills, among others, with the purpose of helping them to deal with the entire treatment process with the minimum emotional cost possible.
This network is composed of couples who have received treatment in IMER and who voluntarily offer their experience and emotional support to those couples starting infertility treatment.
We know that it is of great help for couples who start out on this initiative to learn of concrete experiences of other couples who have gone through the same type of situation. This service is a pioneering effort of its kind in Spain, and is offered by IMER free of charge.
In addition to the described programs, the psychological counseling service attends any psychological problems that may arise during infertility treatment.
