The Spanish fertility society (SEF) defines these treatments as:
Treatments in which, like other reproduction techniques, the goal is to achieve a pregnancy, but that can delay in time this outcome.
Patients that may require these techniques are, for example, people that have to undergo oncological therapies that will undermine their reproductive capability, or women that want to delay maternity for different reasons.
Various possibilities exist:
- Oocyte cryopreservation: Ovary function is stimulated to obtain, via transvaginal oocyte retrieval, an elevated number of oocytes that are immediately cryopreserved. These oocytes can be used in the future thus avoiding, for example, the fertility decline due to age.
- Embryo Cryopreservation: in this case a complete IVF o ICSI cycle is executed to obtain embryos that can be inmediately frozen. At the needed moment they can be unfrozen and transferred to the mothers uterus.
- Sperm freezing: Normally it is recommended to patients that will undergo oncological therapies and that, because of the age, have not yet considered the possibility of generating offspring.
We recommend freezing various samples for every patient before starting any oncological therapy.
